MEET SCOTT & STEPHANIE

Influenced by the natural elements and flowing forms of other art mediums, such as glass, Scott and Stephanie embrace projects that challenge conventional norms and redefine artistic expression. They find inspiration in these organic shapes, creating works that evoke profound emotions.

Outside of their art, they enjoy spending time with their two Great Danes, Axl and Rose and nurturing their garden, hobbies that reflect their connection to nature and their belief in life's interconnectedness. Through their art, they aim to elevate the viewer's experience, resonating on a personal level.

As they continue to evolve, Scott and Stephanie are committed to exploring new techniques and carving methods, challenging conventions, and pursuing their passion.

For over 30 years Scott and Stephanie Shangraw, the husband-and-wife duo behind Shangrila Woodworks, combine their talents and artistry to create stunning wood sculptures and vessels.

Their tagline, "Art Where Nature Ends," perfectly encapsulates their vision. Scott’s passion for woodworking began in high school, but it wasn’t until their 30s that they both committed to art as a full-time vocation.

After years of managing retail businesses and navigating the complexities of that world, they sought a lifestyle where creativity and freedom could flourish. Initially inspired by renowned furniture maker Sam Maloof, they started with fine furniture.

After crafting incredible sculpted furniture for several years, they started carving unique sculptures.

Stephanie draws on her artistic background and helps with the vision of each creation, assisting Scott in some of the design aspects. She brings each piece to completion with meticulous sanding and finishing, bringing them to their final point.

Living in the breathtaking landscapes of New Mexico, Scott and Stephanie are deeply inspired by nature. They focus on salvaged and reclaimed wood, infusing new life into fallen trees through their carvings. Their process is intuitive and meticulous, transforming raw wood into captivating sculptures with tools such as chainsaws, grinders, and various other carving tools. Techniques like stone inlays, glass accents, texturing and copper patina techniques add depth and intrigue to their work.

Their art embodies the harmony between nature and imagination, pushing the boundaries of traditional woodworking. The use of salvaged materials and innovative carving methods gives each piece a unique essence.
